Advanced tutoring to help ambitious students thrive in Mathematics and Statistics

Mathematics with clarity, structure and reason

Many students find themselves held back in mathematics – not through lack of effort, but because the underlying structure of the subject has never quite become clear.

I help students develop a secure grasp of algebra, reasoning and abstraction across the syllabus – the foundations on which all mathematics depends. With these in place everything becomes more coherent, more manageable, and often more enjoyable.

Who this Is for

This is particularly suited to students who:

  • are capable, but not yet confident
  • are aiming for strong results at NCEA Levels 2–3 or Scholarship
  • are considering IB or A Level pathways
  • would benefit from deeper understanding rather than more repetition
  • are hoping for entry to significant universities or other organisations

Areas of work

NCEA Levels 1, 2, 3 and Scholarship (all topics)
Core algebra • calculus • trigonometry • probability & statistics • sequences & series

International Baccalaureate (IB) Standard and Higher Levels (all topics)
Analysis & Approaches; Applications & Interpretation: all topics

A Level / International A Level (all topics)
Pure Maths, Further Pure Maths, Statistics, Mechanics, Decision Maths

My approach

  • Careful, step-by-step explanation of ideas, making sure they’re understood
  • Emphasis on explaining structure and logical thinking with clarity
  • Development of independence and mathematical judgement
  • Targeted support for assessments and examinations
  • Alignment with school teaching, with added depth where needed

Why this matters, and where it matters

Recent changes in the New Zealand curriculum have emphasised context and interpretation in mathematics courses. This perspective is important but it can leave students without full confidence in the underlying concepts and techniques that are fundamental to mathematics and essential at higher levels. If students can establish that confidence early they will:

  • move through Level 2 and Level 3 with greater assurance
  • engage successfully with more demanding material
  • open up the options of IB, A Level and university mathematics

About me

I hold a DPhil in Mathematics from Oxford University and have spent over 40 years working with mathematics in UK, US and NZ government.

I have a longstanding interest and experience in explaining mathematics clearly and helping students engage with it thoughtfully and confidently.

Practical details

  • One-to-one tuition (Wellington-based or online)
  • Flexible scheduling, usually based on early evenings
  • $50–$60 per hour depending on level and travel

The outcome

Students who understand the structure of mathematics thoroughly typically:

  • work more efficiently
  • produce clearer, more accurate solutions
  • achieve stronger examination results
  • approach further study with confidence
  • go on to great positions at university and other organisations
