Origami Wheel

This one’s a bit of a macho test for modular origamists: the basic unit is the simple zig-zag or PhiZZ unit (see Origami Polyhedra), and all you have to do is put about 256 of them together to make a doughnut or torus. The only real skill is in arranging the 5-, 6- and 7- sided openings to form the torus shape, while charm is added in the way the colours are arranged.

I made this one ‘out of my head’ in the USA when I first got interested in modular origami, after seeing one on the internet by (I think) the UK’s Ian Harrison. Unfortunately when I left the USA I didn’t have the space to ship it back to the UK, and it had become a bit floppy and sad – so with a heavy heart I put it in the trash.

If I ever fancy another obsessive week or two I might just make it again – but it’s a big thing and needs a lot of house room. (That white table was about 1.5m wide.)

That’s all there is for Origami, but you might like to go from here to Hexastix or Even more about Polyhedra
