NZQA Level 1

Exam Papers and Published Answers for New Zealand NZQA Level 1 Maths – and solutions from me and ChatGPT, sometimes with comments on what I think of the questions.

NZQA 2023-25

From 2023 there are four standards in Level 1:

  • 91944 (AS 1.1)Explore data (Internal)
  • 91945 (AS 1.2)Mathematical Methods (Internal)
  • 91946 (AS 1.3)Mathematical and Statistical Interpretation (External)
  • 91947 (AS 1.4)Mathematical Reasoning (External)

Most of the exam focus is on 91947 Mathematical Reasoning, so that’s mainly what’s on this webpage.

Scroll further down for some good non-NZQA material, and for NZQA material before 2023.

The 2023 paper was set up as a ‘pilot’ paper for the new syllabus, and this shows. Don’t try it until you’ve done everything else you can find, including what’s listed below.

Everything else

  • Practice tests in the published textbooks – e.g. Walkermaths usually offers 6 tests for each standard, and other textbooks do similarly.
  • Jamie Seddon (Snedmaths) has a very nice set of questions including 5 mock exams for 1.4 Mathematical Reasoning.
  • Dr Frost has lots of good material, though it’s organised by topic not standard and it’s bit of a paper-chase to find what you want. (Schools might offer a quick link to what’s relevant.)
  • Older NZQA exam papers are also available but they might not cover quite the right syllabus, so they should be used with caution.

NZQA 2013-23

In 2013-23 there were 8 standards and the focus was more clearly on ‘the core maths’ than on ‘the stories around the maths’. There were also some slight differences in the overall content.

Internals (coursework)

  • 91026 (Number)
  • 91030 (Measurement)
  • 91035 (Statistics – multivariate)
  • 91036 (Statistics – bivariate)

Externals (exams)

  • 91027 (Algebra)
  • 91028 (Tables / Graphs)
  • 91031 (Geometry)
  • 91037 (Statistics / Probability)

Question papers to follow, but for the moment here’s a useful website…

NZQA 2003-13

And before 2013 things were different again:

  • 90147 Algebra (External)
  • 90148 Graphs (External)
  • 90149 Measurement (Internal)
  • 90150 Geometric Patterns (Internal)
  • 90151 Number Problems (External)
  • 90152 Right-Angled Triangles (External)
  • 90153 Geometry (External)
  • 90193 Statistical Methods (Internal)
  • 90194 Probabilities (External)
  • 90194 Probabilities (External)
  • 90799 Algebraic Methods (External)
  • 90800 Features of Graphs (External)

Usually more than one paper was set on a particular day, with each one expected to take 1/2 an hour to answer. It must have been a nightmare to organise.
